Ph.D. Assistantship in Winter Limnology and Mountain Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology
We are recruiting a Ph.D. student in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at University of Colorado Boulder in the lab of Dr. Isabella Oleksy. Housed in the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, the Oleksy Mountain Limnology Lab investigates the impact of global environmental change on aquatic ecosystems in high-elevation regions. We use a combination of field, modeling, and lab-based approaches to understand how climate change and other global change factors influence various ecosystem processes in inland waters.
The successful applicant will conduct limnological research as part of a larger NSF-funded project aimed at understanding how changing winter conditions influence algae, including seasonal succession, competitive outcomes, and the strength of the ecological response to prior ecosystem conditions (ecological memory). Opportunities to develop ideas associated with the larger project are encouraged as part of the Ph.D. program.
A M.S. degree in ecology, environmental science, biology, watershed studies, or a closely related field, with evidence of research success in the form of a thesis and/or publications is strongly preferred; demonstrated research excellence and experience may substitute for the M.S. degree. Experience with phytoplankton analysis techniques in addition to at least one the following is desired: aquatic sample processing, data analysis, flow cytometry, fluorescence analysis, microbial or algal incubations, lake modeling. The ability and desire to work with team to sample remote lakes year-round is necessary. The ideal candidate should communicate effectively, be reliable, well-organized, respectful of others, committed to team science, and interested in contributing to a cohesive lab environment. The official start date is August 2024, with an option to begin field work as early as May or June 2024.
Interested candidates should contact Dr. Isabella Oleksy ([email protected]) with the subject line, “Winter Limnology PhD Application” and the following items compiled into a single pdf: (1) a one-page cover letter describing what got you into science, your most rewarding research experience, and your experience and interest in the position, (2) a resume or CV, (3) contact information for at three professional references, and (4) academic transcript(s), either unofficial or official.
The Oleksy Mountain Limnology lab is committed to creating a diverse environment; all qualified applicants will receive consideration, however, only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted. Candidates would be expected to gain acceptance into the EBIO Ph.D. program (https://www.ebioprospectivegrad.com/). Applications for the program are due December 1st, but interested candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Oleksy well before the deadline.
